IB&M HISTORY

IT ALL STARTED WITH A GRAIN OF CONFIDENCE…

Craft beer and distilling is a way of life. Its magical sensations of flavors, bold tastes, and unique varieties hold independent pride.

Prior to prohibition, malting barley was a major grain crop with millions of acres grown across North America. Malting barley never recovered from prohibition and the subsequent growth of corn and soybeans.

Across North America, corn and soybeans are easy to come by, so most of the barley production is used for animal feed and there is NO locally united farm-to-brewer/distiller ecosystem.

We knew we were on to something when we found little to no barley in our state. Thus, Independent Barley & Malt was proudly established in 2016.

“Barley is a grain I can get behind.
Malt needs to be more accessible in Michigan.”
